Ambassador Stories

Mickey Sumner

Mickey is an amazing actress, a wonderful mother, and a passionate activist for progressive politics. We recently met at her new house to shoot some photos and chat over afternoon tea.

Why acting?

I’ve always wanted to act, since I was a little girl. But I was super, painfully shy and didn’t like asking for attention. I went to Parsons school of Design - I studied painting and sculpture and eventually moved myself into performance art which then led onto taking acting classes where I became hooked. I feel fully alive and complete when I can create something using my whole body.

Acting does that for me. I’m still pretty shy and introverted in my day to day life but through different characters I get to access all these parts of myself. I find it very liberating.

What can you tell us about your next project Snowpiercer?

I've been working on this show since 2017! But the world will finally get to see it next year in 2020. It’s been a crazy ride. The show is a Cli-Fi thriller based on the graphic novel and Bong Joon Ho’s amazing movie. It is set on a train, that circles the world perpetually and is inhabited by the last remnants of humanity, after mankind froze the world over. Just you wait... (I'm heading back to Vancouver in the Fall to start Season 2!)

We share a love for the Island of Cortes in BC. What drew you to the island?

Oh Cortes. Yes. When I first met my husband Chris he showed me photos of this magical land on this island in BC. I’d never been to Canada but we went for the weekend to visit our friend (the mycologist) Paul Stamets who also lives on the island and as soon as we stepped foot on the property and I saw the view looking out over Desolation Sound I just knew we were supposed to be the guardians of this land. I’d only known Chris for 6 weeks - it was kind of insane - but we went for it. It’s paradise up there.

What are your biggest struggles?

I struggle with anxiety: PTSD and post-partum anxiety. The beginning of our son’s life was extremely scary, lots of unknowns, lots of hospitals and doctors. He is doing amazing but I still struggle. I'm pretty private but by being honest about this publicly I hope that anyone else out there who is also struggling with this knows they are not alone.

What are your favorite accomplishments?

Being a mother and making a living by creating and telling stories.

What part of your personality are you most thankful for?

I'm stubborn. And i think on the whole it has served me well. Once i make a decision, I stay on track, and i persevere until the job is done or i have reached the goal. Im a Capricorn and I definitely feel goat like - slowly, steadily, stubbornly making my way up the mountain.

What does your favorite or ideal sunday afternoon look like?

Being English we traditionally have a Sunday Roast on Sunday afternoons - it’s a time for the family to reconnect after the week and feast ! Roast lamb with roast potatoes, carrots, Yorkshire puddings and lots of mint sauce and gravy. My mum was very passionate about family Sunday Roasts, and making sure we were all together and fed really well and then we would usually all go for a big walk in the mud afterwards. I think Sundays should be about being with your loved ones, eating really well, resting and trying to get out into nature.

What gives you hope for the future?

Akira (my son), Greta Thunberg, Psychedelic Research, and LOVE.

What would you like to bless the world with? Pick one word.

What excites you about being an LSA ambassador?

YOU: Thomas & Matthew. Im really inspired & moved by your energies, your values and what you have created together. There is so much love and thoughtfulness in everything you guys touch its an honor to be able to go out into the world wearing your scarves. You immediately make people feel part of a family - its super beautiful.

What are you doing next? How can people get involved?

Im trying to eliminate plastic bottles from my life - Im a big fan of Lonely Whale.

Im also a proud board member of The Lunchbox Fund - an amazing organization that provides a nutritious daily school meal to children in South Africa who would otherwise go hungry. This meal encourages children to attend school and enables them to concentrate and learn. If anyone is interested in getting involved with this please go to their website.
